The Matador "British Shishiga" was developed based on a 4-ton truck by Hardy Motors and FWD companies in the early 1930s. In 1932, Hardy Motors was acquired by AEC. In 1937, the Matador 853 with a gasoline engine appeared.

In 1938, the War Ministry placed an order for 200 vehicles to be used as a medium truck, and the first prototype was delivered on January 9, 1939. The first production vehicle with a diesel engine was delivered in November 1939.

Designed as a Medium Artillery Tractor, it was used to tow 5-inch guns.

The Matador had many modifications: equipped with generators and adapted for transporting 25-pounder guns. An armored command vehicle was also produced.

From 1937 to 1945, about 10,000 units were produced. The Matador was used in the British Army until 1970.
