Oryol Oblast is located in the southwest of the European part of Russia, in the central part of the Central Russian Upland in the forest-steppe zone. The territory stretches more than 150 km from north to south and over 200 km from west to east. The terrain is a hilly plain, dissected by steep riverbanks and ravines. Oryol Oblast belongs to the moderately continental climate zone, characterized by warm summers and moderately cold winters. There is a clear change of seasons. From northwest to southeast, the continentality of the climate increases.
