Farming Simulator 22 features a stone system where stones of various sizes appear after plowing/cultivating, which can severely damage your equipment. Therefore, it is very important to remove these stones as quickly as possible, and there are different ways to do this. By the way, this setting can be turned off. In that case, you don’t need to remove the stones.

In FS22, stones come in different sizes. You can accidentally dig up small, medium, or large stones, and each size has its own effects. Let’s start with how to determine the size of a stone. Small stones on the map are shown in yellow, medium stones are shown in orange, and the largest ones are red. However, you can also distinguish them visually; it’s quite simple. You can see the difference between stone sizes in this screenshot.

But what gameplay role do stones have in FS22? They do not affect the yield of your crops, so you can expect full income. However, if you don’t remove the stones (especially if they are medium or large), there is a high chance of damaging your equipment, and repairs will cost you a pretty penny. It’s quite possible that your seeders and planters won’t be damaged during work, but if you don’t remove the stones, the harvester will definitely need to be taken for repairs.
Remove stones whenever you have the chance, because if you don’t remove them and continue working the soil on that field, the number of stones will gradually increase, and there is a high chance of encountering larger stones. Don’t be lazy, always remove the stones!
Tip! If you have the seasons setting enabled and your crop is about to wither, it’s better to take the risk and harvest the crop even if there are large stones in the field. Yes, you will damage your equipment, but the income will most likely cover the expenses. You will lose part of the profit, but it’s worth it.
But what causes field stones to appear? It’s the result of plowing and soil cultivation when you use a cultivator or plow. The equipment you use also plays an important role. Depending on the equipment you use, the quantity and size of stones may vary. There are certain types of equipment that prevent stones from appearing: disc harrows, rotary harrows, direct seeders, and small cultivators.

If small stones appear on your fields, you can simply use a roller, which will press all these small stones back into the soil and also compact the soil. Consequently, with one rolling, you get two bonuses at once: you remove stones and increase yield by 2.5%. Use a soil roller after sowing crops and that’s it. However, this method only works with small stones; it won’t work with medium and large ones.

We’ve covered small stones, but what about medium and large ones? Let’s figure it out. You can’t press them back into the soil, and medium and large stones can seriously damage your equipment. To collect them, you will need special equipment – a stone picker tool. Yes, this will take more time than simply rolling the soil and pressing the stones back, but look on the bright side – collected stones can be taken to a stone crusher and sold, thus earning you extra profit.
By the way, small stones can also be collected using these tools, but in the case of small stones, it’s much more profitable to just press them back into the soil, since collecting small stones takes too much time and the money from selling them is too little.
