Description

Tata Motors Ltd. is the largest Indian automobile manufacturing company, part of the Tata Group, formerly known as TELCO (TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company).

Tata Motors was founded in 1945 when the company began producing locomotives. The company produced its first commercial vehicle in 1954, in collaboration with Daimler-Benz. The company was listed on the NYSE in 2004, and in 2005 it entered the top 10 corporations in India with a revenue of 320 billion INR. In 2004, it acquired the Daewoo truck manufacturing plant in South Korea, now known as Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle. The most anticipated vehicle of the company, the Tata Nano, was launched into production in January 2008.

In March 2008, Tata Motors purchased the British Jaguar and Land Rover brands from Ford Motor Company, which also include Daimler, Rover, and Lanchester. The deal was completed on June 2, 2008.
